Discover the unspoiled natural beauty, historical treasures, and fascinating local culture of Kyushu, Japan on our Discover Kyushu Group Tour, featuring the thrilling Karatsu Kunchi Festival. Kyushu is a little island in southern Japan that has a lot for travelers to enjoy, and guests on this tour will gain a good introduction to its charms. Travelers looking to explore Japanese history can find thought-provoking sites in such places as Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima, and those interested in Japanese spirituality step into Shinto legend when they visit Takachiho. Visitors in search of natural beauties will find much to admire on Yakushima Island and across the region. And those looking for rare cultural immersion are in for a treat: the heart-pounding energy of the Karatsu Kunchi - an important and exciting local festival featuring enormous colorful "Hikiyama" floats!

The tour departs from Fukuoka and begins with an unforgettable experience: a day at the Karatsu Kunchi festival in Karatsu City. This historic religious and cultural festival involves large groups of people pulling enormous floats called “Hikiyama” through the town and over the sand of nearby Nishinohama Beach. The Karatsu Kunchi has been held in Karatsu for over 400 years and is one of Japan's most important festivals.

But the festival is only the beginning of your immersive journey through Kyushu. We walk through the bright red torii shrine gates at Yutoku Inari Shrine and tour a brewery at Hizenya, and tour the Peace Park, Dejima District, Glover Garden, the Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum, and Oura Church - one of Nagasaki's UNESCO World Heritage Hidden Christian Sites. We see an impressive Japanese castle at Kumamoto, take a bullet train to Kagoshima to visit Senganen Garden, stop at Chiran to see the Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots, and take a Sand Bath at Ibusuki before going to UNESCO World Heritage Yakushima Island to admire the ancient thousand-plus year-old “Yakusugi” cedar trees. Enjoy an Evening Kagura Performance at Takachiho and a trip to breathtaking Takachiho Gorge, appreciate the hot springs of the Beppu Hells, and taste foods that have been cooked in the steam of the hot springs, spend some time in the company of wild Monkeys at Mt. Takasaki, and stop at Usa Shrine before returning to Fukuoka for the end of the tour.

Book one of AJT's Discover Kyushu Tours for an unforgettable trip through Kyushu Island, exploring its history, natural beauty, and culture - including a day at the Karatsu Kunchi Festival. The tour includes all hotel accommodations (some Japanese style), transportation via private coach bus, and full escort by one of our friendly, professional English-speaking guides.
