12-Day Central Japan with Snow Monkeys & Nakasendo Trail

40 Reviews
12 days 11 nights

Walk the Nakasendo trail, explore countryside towns in the mountains, and witness Snow Monkeys at a natural hot spring on this customizable leisure tour.

This custom itinerary tours in comfort and combines top attractions in Tokyo and Kyoto with the Nakasendo Trail's historical significance, the awe-inspiring beauty of the Japanese Alps, and the endearing charm of the Yudanaka Snow Monkeys, offering a journey that presents travelers with a mix of cultural heritage, natural wonders, and unforgettable encounters.

Walk The Nakasendo Trail, a historic route that dates back to Japan's Edo period. This ancient path served as a vital connection between Kyoto and Edo (present-day Tokyo), linking the two most important cities of the time. The journey from Narai to Tsumago to Magome provides a captivating experience, allowing visitors to stroll through these post towns frozen in time, offering glimpses into the everyday lives of the past. Narai, often referred to as "Narai-juku," was a crucial rest stop on the Nakasendo Trail, known for its strategic location and prosperity during the Edo period. This picturesque town boasts a well-preserved historical district, lined with traditional Edo-style buildings, merchant houses, and inns. Tsumago prohibits the use of cars during the day, contributing to the preservation of its historical character. This policy enhances the town's tranquility and authenticity, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully in the ambiance of ancient Japan. Magome, while similar in architectural charm to Narai and Tsumago, has its distinct appeal. This post town features a sloping cobblestone street lined with shops, restaurants, and traditional houses.

See how impressive mother nature is at Hakone and Mt. Fuji. Stay at an onsen hotel (Japanese style room), where you can unwind in the hot springs (onsen) and dine on gourmet kaiseki cuisine. Visit the dramatic Black Crow Castle (Matsumoto Castle) en route to Takayama, located amongst the Japanese Alps. Due to their remote location, these places are beautifully preserved and developed their own culture that is unique from the rest of Japan. Visit the charming village of Shirakawa-go and understand what the gassho-zukuri architectural style entails. You'll also have a chance to visit the beautiful, but often overlooked city of Kanazawa. Here, you'll visit the Kenrokuen Garden (one of Japan's top three gardens) and see what six attributes make a perfect Japanese garden landscape.

Take a food tour in Osaka and feed deer in Nara, as well as tour the ancient city of Kyoto, where you will have access to the city's gardens, temples, shrines and specialty shops. You'll also get the opportunity to experience a green tea ceremony and a meet- and-greet with a maiko – an apprentice geisha, and stroll the beautiful Arashiyama, the outskirts of Kyoto.
