Together they embody the <a title=\"Proverb\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proverb\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">proverbial<\/span><\/a> principle to <strong>&#8220;see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil&#8221;<\/strong>. The three monkeys are <strong>Mizaru<\/strong>, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; <strong>Kikazaru<\/strong>, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and <strong>Iwazaru<\/strong>, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil. Sometimes there is a fourth monkey depicted with the three others; the last one, <strong>Shizaru<\/strong>, symbolizes the principle of <strong>&#8220;do no evil&#8221;<\/strong>. He may be shown crossing his arms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are various meanings ascribed to the monkeys and the proverb including associations with being of good mind, speech and action.
