It is open daily except Mondays during the warmer months; an admission fee is charged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The garden was established in 1902 as a branch of the <a title=\"Koishikawa Botanical Garden\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Koishikawa_Botanical_Garden\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Koishikawa Botanical Garden<\/span><\/a>, Tokyo, to specialize in the study of <a title=\"Alpine plant\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alpine_plant\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">alpine plants<\/span><\/a>. It was first located near <a title=\"Toshogu Shrine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toshogu_Shrine\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Toshogu Shrine<\/span><\/a>, but in 1911 moved to its current site, and in 1950 enlarged to include part of the Tamozawa Goyotei garden, a summer house of Japan&#8217;s royal family.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today the garden contains about 2,200 <a title=\"Species\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Species\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">species<\/span><\/a> (130 species of <a title=\"Pteridophyte\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pteridophyte\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pteridophytes<\/span><\/a>, 70 species of <a title=\"Gymnosperm\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gymnosperm\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gymnosperms<\/span><\/a>, and 2,000 species of <a title=\"Angiosperm\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Angiosperm\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">angiosperms<\/span><\/a>), with good collections of temperate trees and shrubs, including 22 of the 24 indigenous Japanese <a title=\"Acer (genus)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acer_(genus)\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Acer<\/span><\/a> species, more than 10 species of Japanese <a title=\"Prunus\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prunus\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prunus<\/span><\/a>, and 80 <a title=\"Rhododendron\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhododendron\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rhododendron<\/span><\/a> species. Many herbaceous species are grown beneath the trees, as well as more specialized collections in rockeries, <a title=\"Bog\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bog\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bog<\/span><\/a> gardens, and a <a title=\"Fern\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fern\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fern<\/span><\/a> garden (about 60 species).
