Washoku
Japanese cuisine was nominated to enter the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in October, and now it is official: “washoku”, or traditional food and way of eating in Japan, has been added to the UNESCO list. The government is hoping to revive the interest of the younger generation when it comes to learning the traditional dietary cultures that should be passed on to them. The government also would like to continue passing on Japanese food culture to the generations to come and would like to work harder to let people overseas appreciate the benefits of “washoku”.
Kobe Luminarie
Kobe Luminarie in Japan has turned on last week hundreds of bright lights, but not as a Christmas celebration. The annual illumination is actually used to commemorate the thousands of victims the Hanshin Awaji Great Earthquake has made in Japan in 1995. To celebrate the city’s achievements and offer its citizens hope in a time of darkness, the Italian government donated hundreds of thousands of individually painted lights to adorn the city. It became so popular that every December, since 1995, to give people hope and to remember the quake’s thousands of victims.
Lake Shikotsu-ko
Lake Shikosu-ko is well-known as Japan’s northernmost ice-free lake, which results from its depth. Surrounded by mountains, it is clearly a jewel of Hokkaido. In the winter, a little corner of Lake Shikotsu’s is converted into an ice village, complete with ice-homes, an ice fort and even an ice cathedral. There are ice slides that children play on and a flat rink for sliding around on. Really impressed with the size and beauty of the structures as the shimmered in the cold sunshine.
