Ameyoko, Ueno
Located in the South of Ueno Station, Ameya-yokocho or Ameyoko is easily accessible by the JR or subway. This street market district highly frequented and packed with people on 31 december when tokyoites come in the area to buy food and specially fish for “osechi ryori” the traditionnal new year’s meals. This is also a great place to get your Japanese snacks.
Lake Ashi, Hakone
The name “Ashinoko” means lake of reeds (ashi is reed and ko means lake). This beautiful lake, lies about 720 metres above sea level and is surrounded by mountains, including the iconic Mount Fuji. It has an area of seven square kilometres and is 19 kilometres in circumference, making it the largest lake in this area. It is a crater lake lying along the southwest wall of the caldera of Mount Hakone, and was formed after the volcano’s last eruption 3,000 years ago.
Gyokusendo Cave, Okinawa
Gyokusendo cave is located in the south of Okinawa, between Tamagusuku village and Gushikami village. It is claimed to have the greatest stalactites and stalagmites in Asia. At 5 kilometers, the cave is Japan’s second longest with 890 meters currently open to the public. Gyokusendo cave has 1,000,000 stalactites, which is the largest number in Japan.
Tokyo Character Street
When you step into Tokyo station underground, there is a huge shopping area. You can meet some famous characters at “Tokyo Character Street” such as Domo-kun, Totoro, One piece or Naruto, of course Hello Kitty and rilakkuma, etc etc. If you are a big fan of japanese anime & cartoon characters you’ll definitely love it there.
