Hokkaido's summer is ideal for nature lovers.
Hokkaido is considered Japan’s
last frontier and is home to the indigenous Ainu
people. This region includes
towering mountain ranges, pristine lakes,
volcanoes, vast forests, open
pastures, and hot
springs (onsen). In the mild summers
you’ll see an explosion of color, with over 500
alpine
flowers blooming throughout the season. Hokkaido's
marshlands become a
nursery for many new families such as Goosander
and Japanese Crane chicks
and female Sika Deer with calves in tow head for
the seclusion of coastal
marshes.
Lavender has been
cultivated
in Hokkaido for more than half a century. When the
arrival of lower priced, imported lavender led to
a decrease in demand
for Hokkaido's
lavender in the 1960s and
70s, the local lavender's
main function shifted from agricultural product to
tourist attraction.
Nowadays,
Furano's
lavender fields attract large
numbers of visitors to the region every summer,
when
the plants are in full bloom. The majority of
lavenders start blooming
in late June and reach its peak from around mid
July to early August.
At
Shiretoko,
we will take a small boat to cruise close to
Shiretoko's
sheer rocky cliffs and observe colonies of sea
birds and Brown Bear.
Hokkaido's coastal waters boast some of the best
and freshest seafood,
including crab, scallop, sea urchin, squid, cod,
salmon, shrimp, abalone,
surf clam, salmon roe, herring, and kelp. This
tour includes most dinners,
including traditional Japanese banquets and buffet
dinners with all you
can eat seafood and giant crab legs.
