Japanese ceramics have a long history dating back 1,200 years.

Though an art form unto itself, ceramics have pervaded other aspects of Japanese culture. Traditional tea ceremonies use pottery tea pots and flower arranging features specially designed pottery vases. Over 50 famous pottery towns can be found in Japan, each town has its own particular culture and style of pottery.

In addition to your tour guide, you will travelling with Robert Yellin, visiting the famous pottery towns of Kyoto, Shigaraki, Kanazawa, Tajimi and Tokoname. Robert Yellin will give you an introduction into Japanese ceramic styles, offering hands on experience with artists in their homes and studios, taking you to visit temples, gardens, museums, galleries, and giving you exclusive looks and VIP access to Japanese art and culture. A ceramics specialist, Robert Yellin is the host of the Robert Yellin Yakimono Gallery in Kyoto. Yellin has lived in Japan since 1984 and regularly writes for numerous publications on Japanese ceramics. For ten years he was a columnist for The Japan Times, the largest English newspaper in Japan. His articles have appeared in Daruma Magazine, Asian Art Newspaper, and Honoho Geijutsu, one of the leading quarterlies on contemporary Japanese ceramics. Yellin is also the author of a book on sake utensils, Yakimono Sanka.

The book has been recommended by the Japanese Library Association to be included in all public libraries. Yellin's stories have also appeared in WINDS magazine and in Ceramics Art and Perception. Yellin is a member of the Japan Ceramics Society (Nihon Toji Kyokai) and his articles can be seen in the monthly publication Tohsetsu.

This tour has a limit of 16 people, a perfect group size to experience Japanese art and culture in depth with Robert Yellin.
