Hokkaido is an island at Japan's northern extremity, surrounded by sea in all directions. It is an extensive land, accounting for 22% of Japan's total land area with low humidity which makes the summers pleasant. Hokkaido is Japan's last frontier, home of the indigenous Ainu people, spectacular natural scenery and wildlife. Rarely visited by foreign tourists, this is a vast island of wild coastal cliffs, extensive marshlands and forested mountains, a wonderful resource for birds, plants, animals and photogenic natural scenery. In the summer, lavender viewing is one of the top attraction in Hokkaido. Both public and private lavender fields extend along Furano City, and the whole hillside turns into a mass of violet in the high season from mid- to late July. In the winter, the city of Sapporo turns into a snow museum, an internationally renowned largest snow festival. Rows of small and large snow statues are on display at three sites in Sapporo City during this festival, which is visited by two million people including overseas tourists.
